Because gardens are alive, designs consider dynamic qualities as well as basic principles of composition. Each garden’s unique qualities are based on client needs and capabilities, the traits of each landscape and ecological conditions. A garden’s appeal is affected by growth habits of plants and seasonal interest. As a gardener, artist, and designer, owner Laureen Griffin conceives each garden as a place to inspire the senses taking into consideration function, color, texture, scale, scent and sound in the selection and layout of plants and hardscaping. Often both edible and ornamental plants are incorporated into the design. A consultation begins the design process, including a detailed interview and site analysis to develop a deeper understanding of the property owner’s lifestyle and outdoor living scenario. A walk around the property with the client is also essential to assess the site. Together we take a brief look at the landscape to determine the possible scope of the design services. We consider views from within the house and from the proposed garden, favorite plants, what can be saved and discarded, concerns and advantages of characteristics including sun/shade, the slope of the site, moisture retention and drainage. For more complex designs, a full set of drawings can be provided including a list of plants and a timeline with tasks of who will perform each task.

Whether a new design or revitalization, adding a garden to replace an overgrown patch of weeds or monotonous lawn, within a backyard patio, surrounding a pool or for curbside appeal, all are transformed into uniquely tailored gardens and outdoor living spaces.
